Marble tiles are
popular flooring because of their elegant appeal and attractive colors and
patterns. They may be durable and low-maintenance compared to conventional
flooring like wood and ceramic tiles, but you still need to make an effort in
their occasional upkeep as part of prolonging their lifespan. Cleaning marble flooring
is surprisingly easy because the stone naturally resists bacteria and stains,
and it will not accumulate allergens that can typically collect in carpet. Here
are some tips for cleaning and maintaining your marble floor:
- Wipe up dark liquids quickly – Marble tiles may be stain resistant, but they are not stain proof. To reduce the chances of dark liquids to permanently mar the surface of the tile, take time to grab a clean dry cloth to clean them up. You should wipe up acidic spills like vinegar and harsh cleaners as quickly as possible, too.
- Warm water and dish soap will usually do –
Avoid acidic cleansers like bleach, vinegar, and cleaners with lemon in it
because they can damage marble
flooring. Use non-abrasive and gentle dish soap with a neutral pH
when you need to clean marble. Mix around eight ounces of warm water with
a tablespoon of dish soap in a container or spray bottle. Avoid
all-purpose cleaners on your marble
floor, unless they are labeled ‘safe’ for use on marble.
- Wipe the marble tiles thoroughly to make sure they are completely dry – Do not leave your marble floor to soak in water or your preferred cleaning solution. Mop or use a soft dry towel to clean up after the remaining moisture.
- A simple dusting will do, too – Sometimes, you may only need to sweep a little dirt, dust, and debris off your marble flooring. In that case, grab a dust mop or a vacuum cleaner with an attachment and wheels that will not scratch the surface.
